FedEx will sell empty containers to ease port congestion! Ocean shipping time can be shortened by 20 days!

FedEx Logistics CEO Udo Lange said in an interview recently that FedEx is ready to start selling 53-foot empty containers imported from China as a remedy to help shippers avoid congestion at U.S. ports. The service is scheduled to start in January next year.

It is reported that empty containers will be shipped from South China ports outside Shenzhen to US West Coast ports north of Los Angeles and Long Beach. Given the current situation of cargo congestion at ports, shippers can shorten ocean shipping time by 20 days through this service.

The two ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach handle 40% of the container imports in the United States. Lange stressed that the key problem causing congestion at present is the large number of empty containers occupying the space available for loading cargo on the dock. He suggested that ocean carriers deploy sweepers to clear the cargo crowded in the port.

FedEx was one of several major companies that pledged in October to extend port hours to increase throughput and ease congestion. But making the most of off-peak hours requires that every link in the supply chain, including terminals, warehouses and trolleys, run on a consistent schedule.

In addition, more companies besides FedEx are needed to increase the throughput of ports. President Joe Biden said at a White House roundtable last week that thanks to the efforts of major logistics companies and retailers, the number of containers idle at the terminal for more than 8 days has been reduced by 40%.
