Recently, YipitData released the sales data of the bathroom decoration and barbecue grill categories in the United States in the second quarter of 2023. In the past few years, these two categories have shown strong growth momentum. The data revealed the sub-categories and retailers of the two categories in the second quarter.
Inventory of popular bathroom decoration categories, Amazon's share is growing
U.S. consumer spending on bathroom renovation-related categories has increased significantly over the past few years, up 50% since the fourth quarter of 2019. Within this category, some subcategories have played a key role in driving this growth.
Data shows that American consumers are increasingly spending on three key subcategories, including bathroom plumbing; bathroom lighting, fixtures, cabinets and materials; toilets and bidets. In the second quarter, bathroom plumbing accounted for 45% of the total GMV of the bathroom decoration category, followed by bathroom lighting, fixtures, cabinets and materials, accounting for 38% of the total GMV; toilets and bidets accounted for 13%. In the bathroom renovation category, Home Depot has the highest sales share. It is worth noting that Amazon's market share in this category is also gradually climbing. From the first quarter of 2019 to the second quarter of 2023, Amazon's market share increased by nearly 9%. The grill market has always been a dynamic industry, and there were some noteworthy trends in the second quarter, including Weber and Blackstone vying for the top spot, the increasing dominance of gas grills, and the growing popularity of flat-top grills and teppanyaki grills. Weber has long dominated the US barbecue grill market, but Blackstone is gradually catching up. In the second quarter of 2023, Blackstone's sales accounted for 16.13%, a year-on-year increase of 2.45%. Nexgrill also achieved significant growth in the second quarter, with sales increasing by 1.89% year-on-year. In contrast, PitBoss's market share declined the fastest, falling by 2.41% in the second quarter. In the hot-selling sub-categories, gas grills continue to be the first choice of consumers. In the second quarter, gas grills accounted for more than 50% of sales, although the growth remained stable year-on-year.
Flat-top grills and outdoor teppanyaki grills are also growing in popularity, eating into the market share of pellet grills and charcoal grills. Since the fourth quarter of 2022, sales of flat-top grills and outdoor teppanyaki grills have either exceeded or approached those of charcoal grills, indicating a change in consumer preferences for grilling tools.
