Walmart Cyber 5 results: traffic declines, sales increase

Walmart Cyber 5 results: traffic declines, sales increase

According to the latest report from DigitalCommerce360, during this year's Cyber5, which is the five days from Thanksgiving to Cyber Monday, the order volume on the Walmart platform has seen unprecedented growth. However, compared with its competitors, the number of visits to the Walmart platform has declined.

It is reported that Walmart's order volume exceeded the level of 2022 on both Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Data shows that the number of orders per minute on the Walmart platform on Black Friday increased four times year-on-year compared with last year. Walmart's delivery service (WFS) also achieved significant growth during Cyber5. Walmart said that its shipments on Black Friday this year almost doubled compared with the same day in 2022, reaching a historical peak.

Despite the increase in sales and volume, Walmart’s share of total visits to the top 1,000 U.S. retailers during Cyber5 this year fell 2.2%, accounting for only 6.8% of traffic share, compared to the same period in 2022. Walmart’s website visits fell 10% on Black Friday compared to 2022, according to Similarweb.

Walmart's platform is still in its early stages of development, and its sales are still growing rapidly. Walmart is also increasing its investment in e-commerce business. For example, Walmart has been improving its website pages to attract more third-party sellers. As of 2022, Walmart has 155,000 third-party sellers, which is only a small part of the 1.9 million sellers Amazon has.

Earlier this year, Walmart expanded its logistics business to allow sellers to ship large and bulky items through WFS. Items shipped using WFS will receive a "Walmart Fulfillment" label online. Walmart previously said that the label can drive conversions, and when sellers use WFS, their GMV increases by an average of 50%.

According to DigitalCommerce360 research, Walmart's GMV in 2022 will also reach US$118.6 billion, but less than 27.5% of GMV comes from third-party sellers. During this year's Cyber5, about 40% of Walmart's orders came from small and medium-sized enterprises.

However, compared with e-commerce giants such as Amazon, Walmart's e-commerce share is still small. For sellers in some categories, Walmart's weight in their sales channels is not high. For example, furniture retailer Meble Furniture said that its largest sales channel is Wayfair, followed by mazon, Meble Furniture.com and Overstock, and Walmart's share is slightly lower.
