Benchling's Origin

Sajith Wickramasekara founded Benchling in 2012 with one goal: to address his personal frustrations with using outdated technology tools in his student molecular biology lab at MIT.

Benchling Audience

The company's customers include global pharmaceutical companies, emerging biotechnology companies and major research institutions, such as Zoetis, Beam Therapeutics, Zymergen and Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, well-known companies in the life science field, and academic laboratories at universities such as Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford University and Berkeley University. In addition, more than 170,000 scientists in cutting-edge fields such as gene editing technology (CRISPR), chimeric antigen receptor T cell immunotherapy (CAR-T) and genetic engineering use Benchling's cloud platform for DNA design and biological experiments.

In April 2015, Benchling received US$5 million in angel round financing.

In October 2016, it completed a US$7 million Series A financing.

In June 2018, Benchling announced that it had received $14.5 million in Series B funding. This round of financing was led by Benchmark, with participation from F-Prime Capital and Thrive Capital. The company plans to use this funding to accelerate product development and continue to expand the team.

In July 2019, Benchling announced the completion of a $34.5 million Series C financing round led by Menlo Ventures, with participation from Lead Edge Capital, Y Combinator Continuity, Benchmark, and Thrive Capital.
