It allows users to update messages of no more than 140 characters (the upper limit has been raised to 280 characters except for Chinese, Japanese and Korean), which are also called "Tweets". Twitter is described as "the text messaging service of the Internet". The service was co-founded by Jack Dorsey and his partners in March 2006 and launched in July of that year. Twitter is very popular all over the world. According to the financial report released by Twitter, as of the third quarter of 2020, Twitter's monetizable daily active users reached 187 million.

In March 2018, cryptocurrency fraud seemed to be unstoppable on Twitter. Some fraudulent accounts were easily certified by Twitter, while legitimate cryptocurrency-related accounts were blocked. Kraken's certified account that provided customer service to users was mistakenly blocked by Twitter.

On July 7, 2018, it was reported that Twitter suspended more than 70 million accounts in May and June 2018.
