Walmart announced Thursday that it will raise hourly wages for more than 565,000 store employees by at least $1 to ease labor shortages during the holiday shopping season. The pay increase will take effect on September 25.
The company's average hourly wage in the United States is $16.4 per hour after the increase. It is reported that this is Walmart's third wage increase this year. Since 2015, the company has increased its minimum wage by more than 50%, currently $12 per hour. However, this wage is still lower than the $15 of competitors Target and Walmart.
Walmart is constantly improving its benefits to cope with the fierce competition in the labor market. Just last month, the company announced that it would pay 100% of the college tuition and textbooks for its part-time employees.
Meanwhile, other large retailers have also introduced related employment benefits, including Target's own debt-free college program and Amazon's $1,000 signing bonus for new employees.
