According to foreign media reports, DHL announced that it has invested more than $78 million to renovate and expand the Miami International Airport (MIA Hub) facilities. The plan adds new flights to and from Europe, Asia Pacific, South America, and cities in Chile, Mexico and the United States, improving DHL's international connections and service capabilities.
DHL Express now operates an average of 193 flights per week at the MIA Hub, which also provides DHL with a variety of customs clearance facilities, including support from an in-house customs broker and U.S. Customs and Border Protection personnel.
DHL expects shipments throughout the Americas to continue to grow at double-digit rates year-on-year during the holiday peak season, especially for international B2C and B2B businesses. In 2020, B2C shipments in the Americas grew by an average of 44%; as of September this year, they grew by 21%.
The investment is part of a $360 million plan to increase DHL’s U.S. facility capacity by nearly 30% by the end of 2022.
In September 2021, DHL also invested 100 million Canadian dollars to build a new facility in Hamilton, Canada, which is four times the size of the original building.
