USPS holiday package volume dropped by 1 billion pieces year-on-year! Suspected of being hit by supply chain!

The United States Postal Service (USPS) expects to handle 1 billion fewer packages during this year's holiday season than last year, totaling 12 billion, according to a press release this week.

USPS said that the period from Thanksgiving to Christmas is their busiest time of the year. It is expected that the total number of letters, cards and packages processed will exceed 12 billion. The figure for the same period last year was 13 billion, a full billion more than this year, and 2020 is the first year of the outbreak, when the supply chain is tight and the industry is in chaos.

It is understood that the sudden drop in its parcel volume may be related to the epidemic and the recent congestion at U.S. ports. The century-long congestion in the United States that broke out last month has not improved over time, but has become more serious as the year-end peak season approaches.

On November 22, the Port of Los Angeles and the Port of Long Beach jointly announced that they decided to postpone the implementation of the "container overstay fee" for the second time, and the new fee collection time is tentatively set for November 29. This move is to speed up the turnover of containers and alleviate the problem of tight supply chain. However, if the port congestion is not resolved, it means that someone must be fined. According to statistics, if the fee is not postponed, a fine of about 45 million US dollars will be incurred. The second postponement of the fee just shows that the supply chain problem has not been substantially resolved.

USPS claims that its international packages have not been greatly affected. It expects its passenger traffic to increase steadily from December 6 and reach a peak on December 19. The company also plans to increase capacity during the holiday season and deliver more than 9.7 million packages every Sunday.
