It is learned that according to foreign media reports, FedEx expects freight volume to and from Puerto Rico to increase by 10% this Christmas.
A few days ago, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) lifted the export ban on some pork products and their by-products, which was previously one of the mitigation measures to prevent the introduction of African swine fever into the United States.
Because the virus has not been found in Puerto Rico or the U.S. Virgin Islands, the USDA amended the ban to allow pork or by-products to be shipped from Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands to the United States, but only if they are specially handled, sealed and unrefrigerated.
Rolando Medina, FedEx Express director of operations for Puerto Rico and the Caribbean, said the growth in demand for express services in the region is similar to the company's global growth trend in recent years. Global shipments this year are up 10% compared to last year, and between 2019 and 2021, global package handling increased by approximately 100 million.
