Inflation affects online shopping in the U.S.! These trends are worth paying attention to!

It is learned that according to a survey of more than 1,000 American consumers conducted by RetailMeNot, inflation and social media are affecting consumers' online purchasing behavior.

According to a survey by RetailMeNot, 72% of American consumers are now more concerned about inflation, and 20% of consumers prefer shopping on social media channels compared to a year ago.

The survey showed that inflation has caused American consumers to notice higher-than-expected prices in the following categories of products:

  • Groceries (82%)
  • Oil (70%)
  • Catering (51%)
  • Clothing (36%)
  • Electronic products (31%)

About 20% of consumers have engaged in the following shopping behaviors:

  • Frequent use of coupons (59%)
  • Are reducing the number of purchases or visits (58%)
  • Look for coupons or discounts more often (44%)
  • Reducing discretionary spending (40%)
  • Switching to lower-priced brands (39%)
  • Buying more generic brands (37%)
  • Using more rewards or loyalty programs (30%)
  • Postponing major purchases (27%)

Top categories of purchases by consumers via social platforms:

  • Clothing and accessories (33%)
  • Shoes (23%)
  • Electronics (22%)
  • Skin care products and cosmetics (20%)

About 20% of consumers have used the following payment methods:

  • Real-time payments (46%, such as CashApp, Venmo, Zelle)
  • Bank transfer or Automated Clearing House (ACH) payment (37%)
  • Digital or mobile wallet (36%)
  • Tap to pay (33%)
  • Buy now, pay later (23%, such as Klarna, lay away, Affirm, Afterpay)
