Walmart changes Professional Seller badge qualifications, effective next month

Walmart recently announced that it will change the eligibility requirements for obtaining the professional seller badge, which will be implemented from September 20. According to the content, the requirements after the change will be more stringent. Walmart's move is aimed at improving the service level of sellers and better competing with Amazon during the holiday season.

Walmart first launched the Professional Seller badge, which is similar to the verified user marks on Facebook and Twitter, in October 2020.

The specific changes are as follows:

  • Sellers’ on-time delivery rate increased from over 90% to over 95%;

  • The order cancellation rate has further narrowed from less than 2% to less than 1.5%;

  • The seller’s response rate in the past 30 days is over 95%;

  • It is required that the actual delivery date of 95% of the orders in the past 90 days should not exceed the promised delivery date by more than 2 days, which means that sellers need to process orders in a timely manner;

  • Requires settings to support Saturday and weekend delivery;

  • The lag time for deleting active products is less than or equal to 1 working day.

For Walmart, these changes will further enhance its customers' shopping experience. At the same time, as the number of sellers on the platform increases, it is necessary for Walmart to raise its seller standards.

Walmart began to develop its third-party seller business in February 2020. At the first quarter earnings conference, Walmart revealed that the number of sellers on its US site increased by more than 40% year-on-year, and the number of sellers using Walmart's delivery service more than doubled. It is reported that 80%-90% of the products in Walmart's search results use Walmart's delivery service.

More importantly, since March 2021, Walmart has relaxed the negotiation conditions for international sellers to enter the store, and the number of overseas sellers from China, India, Canada and the United Kingdom has exceeded the number of American sellers.

However, for sellers who sell on both Amazon and Walmart, the change may have little impact. This is because Amazon has stricter requirements for sellers selling under its Prime membership program than Walmart does.
