According to a new survey released by the National Retail Federation (NRF) and data and research firm Prosper Insights & Analytics, American consumers are expected to spend more than $12.2 billion on Halloween this year, making 2023 one of the highest Halloween spending years in history. The survey showed that 73% of consumers plan to celebrate Halloween, a record high, up from 69% in 2022. Per capita spending also increased, reaching $108.24, higher than the record of $102.74 set in 2021. 69% of those who plan to celebrate Halloween plan to buy costumes, up from 67% last year. In terms of spending, Americans are expected to spend a record $4.1 billion on costumes, up from $3.6 billion in 2022. The survey also revealed the most popular costumes for Halloween this year. The most popular costumes for children are Spiderman, princess, ghost, superhero and witch. Adults will choose witch, vampire, Barbie, Batman and cat. The most popular pet costumes are pumpkin, bat, bumblebee and spider. 77% of consumers plan to buy decorations, the same number as last year, but higher than 72% in 2019. The survey shows that Americans' total spending on this category is expected to reach $3.9 billion. In addition, candy and greeting cards are also major categories purchased by Americans. Among them, candy spending will reach $3.6 billion and greeting card spending will reach $500 million. 32% of American consumers will buy Halloween items online, while offline discount stores (40%) and Halloween/costume stores (39%) are also popular shopping destinations.
