8 common mistakes Amazon sellers make in product listings. Are you one of them?

First impressions are very important, and most Amazon shoppers notice visual elements first when viewing a product listing.

After studying many Amazon sellers’ product listings, I found that most sellers’ listings have these 8 major mistakes:

1. Insufficient number of pictures

Research has found that many Amazon sellers only put one or two photos in their product listings, even though some of them have 3,000+ reviews. But don’t be fooled by sellers with many reviews, as they may have listed their listings before the Amazon platform became popular.

But in reality, buyers want to know how your brand's products look, what features they have, and even some of the internal properties. You need to show buyers as much as possible about your products, otherwise they may turn to your competitors. Therefore, please include at least 6 photos in your listing.

2. Unprofessional visual content

Cheap or poorly made visuals like fonts, icons, and other graphics will give buyers a bad impression of you. They won’t exactly notice what’s wrong, but they’ll know something’s not right, and they’ll associate that problem with quality.

Sellers should remember that pictures are an important factor in consumers' judgment of whether your product is worth buying, so try to use professional and appropriate fonts, icons, badges and other graphics as much as possible. For example, fonts such as Dinot, Bebas Neue, Roboto or Helvetica are better than some fancy fonts such as Comic Sans, Curlz, Brush Script, Tempus Sans, etc., and avoid using obtrusive badges and icons.

3. Lack of product information

After you’ve captured buyers’ attention with great product images, they’ll want to know:

  • size

  • weight

  • Main Features

Showing the above information can make your product stand out more. What kind of materials is the product made of? Does it contain any allergens? Are there any tips to use it? These are all information that buyers can get when shopping in a physical store. So keep in mind the details that buyers will look for in a physical store and include them in your e-commerce store as well.

4. Cluttered content

You may have heard that “less is more” and that’s correct, take a look at Apple’s website, there aren’t that many unnecessary details. When you’re showcasing your brand, try to avoid using any detailed backgrounds, which will be distracting and you might lose conversions.

Buyers may be looking to buy a product, and after seeing a cluttered screen, they may move on to the next product. For example: when you want to show how a product is used, you need a clean background so that it doesn’t distract the seller.

If you are writing text features, then describing 5-9 features is enough, and each feature should contain one or a few words, not long sentences or even a long paragraph.

5. Blurred product images

To prevent blurry pictures, don't shake your camera/phone while taking the photo, and focus before hitting the "shoot" button. If you can't afford a tripod, try to place the camera on a stable surface while taking the photo.

Additionally, taking clear photos requires enough light, at which point the camera will automatically increase the shutter speed to make the photo look great.

If you can't provide enough light, then you'll need some kind of camera mount, which will extend the shutter speed of the camera, meaning that every movement during that period of time may make the photo blurry.

6. The picture is dark

If your image is dark or has low contrast, buyers will notice it and it may affect their decision to buy. Therefore, take product photos in sufficient light, as light will affect the quality of the image, which will reduce the workload of subsequent image editing.

If you can't provide more light, the shutter speed will be slower and you'll need to be in a stable location to shoot. However, if the pictures you take are dark, there are many online photo editing apps that can solve this problem, such as Canva, BeFunkey, Pizap and Lunapic.

7. The main image shows a bunch of small products or product packaging

Most sellers know Amazon’s rule that 85% of a product image should be used to show the product. Many of them make the mistake of shooting a bunch of screws to cover 85% of the image space when selling small products such as screws. But professional sellers shoot product images with only one screw and let the entire screw occupy 85% of the product image.

Another mistake is to only show the product packaging without a clear preview of what’s inside. Sellers should always think from the buyer’s perspective, and the product packaging cannot reveal anything.

If you sell photos of screws/earrings/pencils, then take photos of individual products and zoom in on as many of them as possible on your homepage.

8. Not showing photos of the product in daily use

As consumers scroll through listings and products, photos showing the product in everyday use allow them to imagine owning the product.

And sometimes buyers may have no idea how to use the product. Buyers want to make sure that the product is suitable for their needs, so you need to show photos of the product in daily use.

You can have a friend use the product and take a few photos, or you can hire a real photographer or model.
