The United States will hold a presidential election in November 2020. The Democratic Party will select a candidate to run for president against Trump, who is currently in power in the Republican Party.

Although the election is still several months away, according to Jungle Scout's product and market research, Amazon has seen an increase in sales of products related to the Democratic presidential candidate , such as shirts, buttons, books , etc.

Let’s take a look at how the U.S. presidential election has affected Amazon’s product trends. ‍



1. Product sales


The public support of the Democratic presidential candidates is reflected in product sales to a certain extent. Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders is leading in the polls, and his related product sales rank first among all Democratic candidates, with an average monthly sales of 915 units for the top 15 products .


The second place is Michael Bloomberg, with an average monthly sales of 194 top 15 products, all of which are books.


The average monthly sales of the top 15 products related to other Democratic candidates are as follows:

  • Pete Buttigieg: 176

  • Elizabeth Warren: 170

  • Amy Klobuchar: 116

  • Joe Biden: 114


In terms of total merchandise sales, Bernie Sanders products accounted for 54% of all Democratic candidates’ total merchandise sales . The other candidates’ shares were as follows:

  • Michael Bloomberg: 12%

  • Pete Buttigieg: 10%

  • Elizabeth Warren: 10%

  • Amy Klobuchar: 7%

  • Joe Biden: 7%


According to data from the US public opinion statistics website 538 ( https://fivethirtyeight.com/ ) as of February 26, the probability of each Democratic candidate qualifying for the presidential election is as follows:

  • Bernie Sanders: 39%

  • Joe Biden: 12%

  • Michael Bloomberg: 2%

  • Pete Buttigieg: Less than 1%

  • Elizabeth Warren: Less than 1%

  • Amy Klobuchar: Less than 1%


2. Search volume


In the past 90 days, searches for Bernie Sanders products have almost doubled. Except for Elizabeth Warren, searches for other candidates' products have increased in the past 90 days . In the past 90 days, searches for Michael Bloomberg products have increased by 68%, and Amy Klobuchar's by 49%.


The monthly searches for all Democratic candidates are as follows:

  • Bernie Sanders: 26,515

  • Joe Biden: 4,055

  • Pete Buttigieg: 5,174

  • Elizabeth Warren: 5661

  • Michael Bloomberg: 1721

  • Amy Klobuchar: 793


Republican searches for Trump-related products are higher than those for all Democratic candidates combined , with 47,927 searches per month .

   

    

But the search trends over the past 30 days show that Bernie Sanders is the only Democratic candidate whose product searches are on the rise , while the product searches for other candidates have all been on a downward trend over the past 30 days:

  • Joe Biden: -18%

  • Michael Bloomberg: -38%

  • Pete Buttigieg: -23%

  • Elizabeth Warren: -11%

  • Amy Klobuchar: -8%


Trump's product searches fell even more, down 45% in 30 days. But despite the drop in Trump's product searches, sales are still strong, with an average sales of 2,327 for the top 15 products, accounting for 58% of the total sales of all candidate-related products on Amazon, while sales of all Democratic candidates' products only account for 42%.


3. Product Types


Sales of hats printed with Trump's slogan "Make America Great Again" continue to be hot, and the sales of these hats have exceeded the sales of all Bernie Sanders Top 15 products.


Trump -related products have the largest variety, including:

  • Yard and garden products: such as flags, yard decorations.

  • Shoes, Clothing & Jewelry: such as hats and T-shirts.

  • Home & Kitchen: Such as grass dolls.

  • Toys & Games: Fake money, talking pen.

  • Sports & Outdoors: Bobbleheads

  • Bernie Sanders: 6

  • Joe Biden: 4

  • Michael Bloomberg: 1

  • Pete Buttigieg: 2

  • Elizabeth Warren: 3

  • Amy Klobuchar: 2


Both Trump and Bernie Sanders have grass dolls , but Bernie Sanders' grass doll sold only 165 units between August 25, 2019, and February 24, 2020. Trump's grass doll sold 4,276 units during that period.
