The return rate of online shopping in the United States may increase to 25% during the peak season! Merchant costs will continue to increase!

It is learned that recently, according to a survey by the Reverse Logistics Association (RLA), the American Logistics Association, as supply chain and inflation problems continue, the online shopping return rate in the United States is expected to increase significantly during this peak season, and merchant costs will also increase accordingly.

RLA executive director Tony Sciarrotta said the increase in returns and merchant costs will exacerbate the already difficult situation of delayed commodity transportation and labor shortages, further exacerbating the deterioration of the supply chain.

According to an RLA survey, in the third quarter of this year, 56% of retailers in the United States said that their return costs had increased. With the frequent occurrence of online shopping activities, merchants are also facing more return requests.

In addition, during Thanksgiving this year, the product catalog of US online retail websites shrank by 6%, including categories such as electronics, clothing and furniture, which caused many consumers to be unable to find what they needed when shopping online and faced the problem of insufficient inventory of goods.

According to a survey by the National Retail Federation, during the peak season in the United States in 2020, the number of goods returned after online purchases accounted for 18.6% of total sales, and this year this year may increase to 25%.

It is learned that as of now, the US online sales in this peak season have exceeded 13.4 billion US dollars, a year-on-year increase of 5%. Experts say that this growth trend is optimistic. Although the growth is slow, it may alleviate the problem of commodity shortages.
