88% of consumers plan to shop on Labor Day! Which categories have the best chance of "exploding sales"?

It is learned that according to a survey by market research firm Numerator, due to the impact of inflation, American consumers' spending during Labor Day (September 4) will decline.

Numerator surveyed 1,054 U.S. consumers in August 2022 and found that 51% of consumers said inflation would affect their shopping plans, while a lower 62% of consumers said inflation would affect their shopping plans over the Memorial Day weekend.

The survey shows that 88% of consumers will shop during Labor Day, with grocery stores (68%), mass retailers (45%) and warehouse club retailers (33%) being the most popular shopping destinations. On the other hand, 17% of consumers will shop online during Labor Day.

In terms of purchase categories, consumers mainly buy food, including meat and seafood (58%), snacks (54%), fruits and vegetables (48%), side dishes (44%) and alcoholic beverages (43%).

In addition, 26% of consumers plan to buy barbecue materials, 8% plan to buy holiday decorations, and 6% plan to buy sporting goods or outdoor games.

Affected by rising fuel prices, 22% of consumers said they would not travel during this year's Labor Day, and consumers' spending on travel products is expected to decrease.

Here are some other key findings from Numerator’s survey:

  • More than a third (34%) of consumers said they plan to shop on the weekends;
  • Most shoppers (51%) will buy groceries, with many also buying clothing and shoes (25%) and household essentials (24%).
  • Consumers intend to cut spending on Labor Day by comparing prices (45%), stocking up on sale items (31%), not purchasing non-essential items (29%), and waiting for a better time to purchase specific products at lower prices (18%).
